How to measure your yard for material

All landscape material estimates start from the same volume formula. Measure the length and width of the area in feet, decide how deep the material should be, and convert to cubic yards:

cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet — a cube measuring 3 feet on each side. Depth is usually measured in inches, so divide inches by 12 before multiplying. For materials sold by weight, such as gravel and river rock, multiply the cubic yards by the material’s density (most gravel weighs 1.4 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard).
